Egg Carton Math

In April, we began to learn about the math concept of addition. After first using plastic Easter eggs to create math equations, we then moved to smaller manipulatives.

Each child was provided with an egg carton and several jellybeans (eggs!) They put the jellybeans into the carton, closed the lid tightly, and shook it up ten times. The students recorded on a piece of paper how many jellybeans were in each space, and then used this data to write and solve addition equations. For example, if there were three jellybeans in the top left corner and two jellybeans in the space below it, they would write 3 + 2 = 5.

Mai-Thy and Dustin were shaking it up!

Fiona was counting how many jellybeans were in each space.

Eric was recording his data on his sheet of paper.
