Who Hatched Collages

Usually, I introduce the art of Eric Carle to the students during our bug unit. However, as this year the students were not interested in learning about bugs, I was happy to utilize some of his other works as well. After reading and discussing several of his animal based books, we decided to create some of our own collages.

The students were given the freedom to decide to create any creature they wished that hatches from an egg.

First, as a class, the students finger-painted an assortment of papers that would later be used in the collage. Then, the decided which animal they would be working on, and which papers best represented that animal to them. The third step was to design a background for their collage, and the final step was to start cutting out pieces to help them represent their animal. Most students also integrated other details into their pictures using collage- clouds, trees, snowflakes, sea weed etc...
