St. Alphonsus ECS

At the Calgary Zoo

To further help us in our study of creatures that live at the zoo, the Kindergarten and Grade One classes from St. Alphonsus took a day trip to the Calgary Zoo. There, we were able to see an assortment of creatures in a variety of habitats, some natural, and some less so. The experience was truly valuable to the students as they were able to see some of their favorite animals in a more realistic atmosphere, and it helped them to understand that some of the stereotypes that they had (for example, the "attack" lion who slept the entire time we were at the zoo!) were in fact incorrect.

Michelle, Eric, Amethyst, Shania, and Zoila thought that if they covered up the paint chips, people would really believe they were standing next to a bear!

Eric was impressed to find that the tropical  birds really enjoyed the same hibiscus flowers that he had on his shirt.

Mai-Thy found that Gorillas like  a hot and steamy atmosphere.

Cage-Ja and Annette realized the butterflies preferred a similar setting- they could last only a few minutes in the heated pavilion.

Cage-Ja enjoyed watching the flamingos bathe...

While this group was strutting their stuff and showing off by standing on one leg.

The students were sad to find the giraffes in a cage- they had wanted to see what kind of trees the giraffes ate.

They were also disappointed that this shy zebra wanted to hide behind the tree.

Listening to the peacock cry and prance around the garden was a high point for many students.

Michelle hoped that if she stood still enough, a butterfly would come and land on her. Unfortunately, she got so hot, she needed to leave the pavilion before that happened.
