Alphabet Animal Activity

Once the students interest in animals was captured by our egg study, our discussions naturally turned to all types of animals, birds, reptiles, etc...not just those hatching from eggs. From conversations, it soon became apparent that the students were particularly interested in creatures that, being from Edmonton, we were likely only to see in a zoo.

The children were amazed at how many creature names they knew, and we quickly began compiling a list. As we were brainstorming, we noticed that we often would come up with several animals beginning with the same letter at a time- the initial sound was reminding us of others with the same sound. We then decided to put our list in alphabetical order. We learned that finding creatures beginning with letters such as Q and X were as difficult as finding other words with those letters. Throughout the remainder of the unit, we added to the list almost daily. This is the list of creatures we compiled.
